Formerly on Stomp (ROBB 001), this is VJM’s latest issue of The Southern Stompers and is oriented towards the band’s vocalist, Michele. The band plays an accompanist role for the most part, not always an easy job for a hot jazz group, and there are most satisfying performances from leader Steve Lane on cornet, trombonist Bob Dwyer, reedman John Wurr, and pianist Hugh Crozier, the latter especially deserving a larger platform for his talent.
How you like your vocalists will decide whether or not you’ll go for this issue. To my ears Michele is not a growling barrelhouse shouter — she’s more of a Lee Wiley than a Bessie Smith and, if she’ll forgive me for saying so, she has a “come to bed” appeal. Nothing Can Change This Love has a most endearing lyric, admirably suited to her style, the type of thing that Peggy Lee does so well
— and Peggy Lee could not have produced a better version than that here. The band’s chordal type backing is excellently scored and, with exploitation, this one track could turn Michele into star material.
Kitchen Man and My Handy Man, whilst good jazz club material, are not really good vehicles for a singer such as Michele, and I’d much rather have had more of Steve Lane’s compositions included, for Geòrgie, Baby How You Let Me Down, Oh Honey and How Can You Leave Me display a rapport that exists between leader and vocalist, and amply illustrate the product of a good working partnership.
A slightly patchy issue for the reasons
I’ve given, but there’s more that I like than I dislike, and I shall be entertained by this for quite some time.

As usual there’s a lot of cleaning up that could have been done, but the general quality is clean and crisp. Creole Rhapsody evidently came from a gritty original. No gimmicking or adverse recharacterisation. The alternates on side 1 are from different sessions and exhibit greater differences than those between the two Rockin ’ In Rhythms which follow. All fine music as must be expected of Duke at this period.... and, of course, essential to those of us who have taken the trouble to obtain the previous five volumes.

Over the past few years there has been a proliferation of Hines LPs — very welcome to admirers like myself, but probably creating a major problem of choice to collectors who only want one or two representative discs. Choice is made even more difficult by the duplication of titles on different recordings. I have completely lost track of the number of Hines versions I have of Rosetta, Monday Date and Caution Blues and, although the master always manages to come up with something fresh on each recording, perhaps the time has come for him finally to leave these well-loved themes out of his recording sessions.
These recordings were made in Sydney last year. The recording quality leaves nothing to be desired and Hines himself was
